
Alexander initially chose unfavorable grounds which surprised Darius. Darius was so confident that he would win the battle that he set up feasts, and invited his whole family to watch the battle. Little did the Persians know that battling at a river ruined their advantage in numbers due to the terrain. The battle ground was chosen by Darius, it was at the mouth of the Pinarus River. Darius assembled a massive army, much bigger than Alexander. In return Alexander gave Ada rule of the fortress, and she pledged allegiance to Macedonia.įinally in the battle of Issus Darius took personal control of his army. The leader Ada of Caria surrendered the fortress before Alexander even arrived.

The siege of Halicarnassus was not even a battle. The Logic behind this was these towns had been ruled for years by tyrants, and by granting them freedom caused other towns to happily give into Macedonian rule.

Alexander on the other hand was campaigning through Persian towns and letting them rule themselves. Antipar Put dictators, and tyrants throughout Greece, and Macedonia to maintain control. Alexander put a man named Antipar in charge of Greece, and Macedonia while he was campaigning. He then took the captured Greek mercenary and sent them back to Greece with 300 suits of Persian armor as a sign to what happened to those who sided with Persia. After the Persian leaders were killed the rest of the army retreated out of confusion.Īfter the victory Alexander buried all that were killed in battle. Alexander and his guards personally killed the high ranking officials on horse back. The Macedonian army then attacked from the sides and wedged their way towards the high ranking officials. The Persians expected the main attack to come from where Alexander was located in the center, so they moved their infantry to the center. All of the Persian chariots were useless due to them not being able to move. Because they were fought on river banks, the terrain was very muddy which took away the advantage Persia had in numbers. The battle took place in modern day Turkey, on river banks.

The first confrontation was the Battle of Granicus River. Alexander and his army pushed farther into Persian territory, so Darius finally put Memnon in charge of a army to confront Alexander. But Darius did not believe it was necessary. Memnon a Greek mercenary hired by the Persians wanted Darius to take early action by destroying the land between Alexander and Persia, to force Alexander to turn back from starvation. Darius knew that he was Alexanders target but decided not to take him seriously. Persia, the huge dynasty in the East was lead by Darius the lll. In 334 B.C Alexander and his army crossed the Hellespont in over 100 boats.
